Holly Bass

Holly Bass is a performer and writer who I have seen and read for many years. Somehow we have never formally met, at least not that I can remember until this night. Holly was performing her piece "Show and Prove" and she came over to see Jane Jerardi's performance video. I was hanging out with Kitty Clark and Beth Burkhart and we all went over to see Holly perform. Beth decided that I should ask her to dance because that is what the performance was all about. However, because I had not read any materials or instructions about what the audience was supposed to do I was scared. SO. Beth brings me over to Holly introduces us and I say "can we tape it" So. We go inside where there is more light and Beth and Kitty take turns behind the camera. I sent this to David Morneau and he made some music.

David Says

"I think it's interesting to see how many people will walk by Boris when he's dancing in public without giving him a second glance (many of his posts demonstrate this behavior). I tried to capture that in my scoring by buring an old scratchy recording underneath subtly looping crowd sounds."

  1. It's interesting about what music means for dance. I went to see an outdoor site-specific performance last week by Bill Shannon, who dances on crutches and here with a skateboard. He also had a few backup break dancers with him. There was no music though in the public park where the performance was, so a lot of people just assumed they were hooligans and kind of walked on by trying not to pay too much attention (people tend to do that in NY!) But when breakdancers dancing to tourists for money use music, everyone stops to watch. They know it's a "dance performance" when there's music.

  2. It was nice to be in the middle of it all having a dance moment knowing no one else could hear the music we were dancing to which made it an interesting private moment in a very public space.

Pre-Futurist Dance Manifesto

The world of the past is no more and the world of the future will never arrive. There is only now and how you decide to respond in the now.

Postmodernism has past.

We believe in the intelligence of the body, the intelligence of the mind and that the two are impossible to separate.

Dance is the result of the physicalized mind and the verbose body and we reject putting the cart of scholarship and language before the horse of dance.

Performance happens now, it does not have to secure funding, book a theater or advertise in newspapers. It does not need rehearsal space. It does not need a concept. It does not need to last for more than a second. It does not need to be ephemeral. It does not need flowy pants, tight tops or bare feet. It does not need previews, reviews or even to be seen at all.

We reject the term modern dance, we make art through movement. We dance, we make videos, we make paintings, we make video games, we write, we sculpt, we draw, we act, we sound and we move. We make art. We are artists.

We can change the world.
